As a photographer, it always brings me joy to see the role photography plays in our lives. Not only is it a way of preserving the history and memories of our families. It's also something that only becomes more valuable and treasured over time. Witness any grandparent pouring over photographs of family members and loved ones who are no longer with them and you will know exactly the value I'm referring to.
It's the only way we know of freezing time, of stopping a moment in its tracks so that we can relive it over and over again. A photograph preserves the past in a way our own memories can not. It has a way of awakening our senses and transporting us back to a particular place in time.
Which is why I believe we should invest in photographing our own families often. Taking photographs both, personally and professionally, is important in documenting our experiences together. Photography is our way of passing memories from generation to generation - even when we can't be there. It serves as a connection to relatives who came before us. Even those we have never met. It's a way of bonding together as we pour over the photographs each holiday when family comes together.
