When it comes to your first child, the amount of research you will do is endless. We want to be as prepared as possible to welcome home baby and that means finding the best car seats, strollers, cribs and diapers. Then determining the best possible options to fit your budget. Finding a newborn photographer is no different.

There are hundreds of photographers in a variety of skill levels, budgets, photography styles, editing techniques and more. But when it comes to finding the right photographer for you every client should consider this: you only get this one chance. By the time your schedule the session and recieve the images it’s likely too late to book a do-over. Is it worth risking someone inexperienced?

Below are some things you should think about and look at when perusing a photographers website.

Just like home decor, people have different tastes when it comes to photography. Make sure that the photographs you see in their portfolio are something you would like to have hanging on your wall. Additionally, consider how timeless their portfolio is. You will also want to pay attention to editing style. Are they dark or light? Rich and colorful or are there more pastels? Can they create artistic effects?

Newborn photography is not for the faint of heart. By the end of the day I feel like I’ve put in a workout. It requires patience, experience and a lot of technical knowledge. It also requires safety training. An experienced photographer can make a world of difference and it’s going to show in your newborn photographs.

I have been "collecting" props for close to a decade now. They arrive of baskets, blankets, backdrops, boats, costumes and decor is starting to spill out of the prop closet. But all of it is necessary and required in order to make each clients newborn photography experience truly custom.

Unless you want something very specific, it’s likely you won’t have to bring a single thing to your session. When looking at a photographers portfolio you will be able to get a feel for the types of props they carry.

Do they have a studio? Not all photographers do and having a professional studio can make a big difference. When it comes to studio work, I have the ability to control all of the lighting. Props and backdrops are easily at hand too. I also have samples of all of my products on the walls so you can get an idea of how something will look in your own home. Bonus, I also have a sitting area with complimentary snacks for new moms and dads to enjoy while they catch up on some relaxation during the newborn photo shoot.

I saved the best for last. You know the saying you get what you pay for? It applies to newborn photography as well. These photos are going to be with your family for generations. They will be pulled out over and over again during the course of your life and your childs life as you work to recall the smallest of details. They’re an investment that only gets more valuable over time - no matter what the stock market is doing.
