Sometimes, we meet people and you never know the struggles they face, or will face in their lifetime. I first photographed the Campbell family for their wedding at the White Room in St. Augustine. Both teachers, they were absolutely the sweetest couple.
Unfortunately, shortly after their wedding they faced heartbreak as the groom's mother passed away, followed by their own heartbreaking miscarriage.
But I believe that good things do come to good people. Like a rainbow after the storm, their sweet little Cora arrived as their rainbow baby.
If you've never heard of the term rainbow baby, its a newborn baby that is born following a miscarriage, stillbirth, neonatal death or infant loss. The term pays homage to the fact that, a beautiful and bright rainbow follows a storm and gives hope of things getting better. The rainbow is more appreciated having just experienced the storm in comparison.
My heart is both saddened and rejoiced whenever I photograph a rainbow baby in the studio. It is saddened because I never wish the loss of a child on anyone, but it rejoices in the fact that through this strife loving couples eventually do get the baby they deserve. I always try to incorporate the story of their rainbow baby into photos, like this North Florida newborn's session.
